Champlain, Samuel de
(1567, Brouage, Francia–25 dic. 1635, Quebec, Nueva Francia).

Explorador francés. Realizó varias expediciones a América del Norte antes de fundar Quebec en 1608 junto a 32 colonos, la mayoría de los cuales no sobrevivió al primer invierno. Se alió con las tribus indias del norte para derrotar a los merodeadores iroqueses y promovió el comercio de pieles con los indígenas. Descubrió el lago Champlain en 1609 e hizo otras exploraciones en el norte del actual estado de Nueva York, el río Ottawa y el este de los Grandes Lagos. Cuando Inglaterra y Francia estuvieron en guerra, corsarios ingleses sitiaron Quebec en 1628 y fue tomado prisionero. En 1632, la colonia fue restituida a Francia y en 1633 hizo su último viaje a Quebec, donde permaneció hasta su muerte.
